Once or twice a month, IYC Latvia organizes excursions for residents of local nursing homes, giving them the chance to enjoy cultural and natural experiences outside their daily routine. These activities are made possible thanks to our collaboration with Caritas Latvia, who help coordinate with the nursing homes, while our team plans the outings and brings together the volunteers.
Last Sunday, September 28th, we took a group of 8 residents to the Latvian National Art Gallery, which opens its doors free of charge on the last Sunday of each month. The visit was full of smiles and quiet moments of admiration in front of the paintings.
The group was accompanied by 6 volunteers, including 4 high school students. Three of the residents were in wheelchairs and one used a walker, which made the day a logistical challenge, but also a beautiful example of patience, teamwork, and care.
These excursions show how small gestures—pushing a wheelchair, sharing a laugh, or guiding someone through an exhibition—can make a huge difference in the lives of the elderly.
