Young members from International Youth Cooperation (Finland and Sweden) spent this summer two weeks helping in a work camp in Uganda. One of the finnish student gives us an account of his great experience:
“We are a group of young students from Finland who went to Uganda this summer to finish constructing a school building. This building was a classroom for some of the students of the St Kizito Primary School in Kito, Mityana district (about 45 km from Kampala). The need for the new classroom was clear, as the students did not fit anymore in the already existing buildings. Of course, in this project we were not alone. We formed a team of 16 people together with Swedish and Ugandan university students. Together we have gathered more than 15.000 € from private benefactors and organizations to cover all the construction material expenses.
The work has started on 3rd day and lasted until 18th of July. The work we were asked to do consisted in covering the floor with concrete, making the mortar or spreading the plaster onto walls. The locals have been really kind to us all, their spirit of happiness and cheerfulness has helped us to work harder.
In addition to the construction work, we have also spent some time getting to know the locals. On one sunday afternoon, we walked around the village, visiting and paying our respects to some seniors of the village and handed out candies and toys to the children along the way. Some of the village inhabitants live in precarious conditions (without electricity, running water etc.). After visiting the elders, the volunteer group played football against the locals. The volunteer team won by 3:2!
